Sappho's on Sunset

  • El Cid Sunset 4212 W Sunset Boulevard Los Angeles, CA, 90029 United States (map)

Step into Sappho’s on Sunset Darlings, where all are welcome, & fear and gender are myths. Following her mysterious disappearance in 550B.C., Sappho has resurfaced as a divine immortal poet and hardworking queer bar owner who hosts ghosts and art salons after hours, and since she’s a dear friend of the Poetry Brothel, she’s gracefully allowed us to inhabit her little dive, just in time for Pride! Bring your shes, gays, theys, and everyone in betwixt. Wear your lace or leather, rhinestones, or roman togas, and get your sexy fix at Sappho’s on Sunset where the liquid lines of luscious lyrics overflow! Whether you seek raw pun-nilingus or a little brain-al, the Poetry Brothel has something to satisfy every longing ear. Hosted by your favorite Mistress of Ceremonies: Linda Ravenswood as Dr. Ach, Suzette!

Featuring Poetry: Kiri Callaghan as Echo, Becca Kahill as Sakina, Valerie Darling, Renata Zhigulina as Jean Paul, Brian Sonia Wallace as Vallachinsk, Tiffany Hudgins as Honey Locale, Rachel Leigh as Madame Rhythm, Frankie Tan as Moonlight, and more to be announced.

Aerial Stylings: Lena Fumi

Siren: Tas Al-Ghul

Mystic: Zachariah the Witch

Madam Tallula presents a rotating cast of poets who impart their work as purveyors of private poetry readings in secret, hidden, well-appointed chambers. You may avail yourself of your choice of poet for tokens at any time during the event.

On the patio, the troupe presents Tarot readings, poetic souvenirs, live typewriter poetry, and occasional dance and musical performances.

On the stage, a three-hour roster of Vaudeville variety entertainment... and words, words, words! The El Cid tapas kitchen and bar will be open for dinner and drinks throughout.

ABOUT THE POETRY BROTHEL

Welcome to a unique and interactive poetry event that takes poetry outside classrooms and lecture halls and places it in the lush interiors of a bordello. The Madame presents a rotating cast of poets, each operating within a carefully crafted character, who impart their work in public readings, spontaneous eruptions of poetry, and most distinctly, as purveyors of private poetry readings on beds, chaise lounges and in private rooms. Of course, any true bordello needs a good cover; ours is a literary cabaret featuring burlesque, live music, vaudeville, aerials, visual art, magic, mysticism, with newly integrated themes, performances and installations at each event.

The Poetry Brothel is brought to you by The Poetry Society of New York, a 501(c)3 performing arts non-profit and GLITS, a community organization that fights for the health, rights, and safety of transgender sex workers.
